Muhammad Sultan Arief

Abstract

The Indonesian government, through Presidential Regulation No. 109/2020, launched the Food Estate project as one of the parts of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) for the 2020-2024 period. There are two Food Estate schemes in Central Kalimantan, covering Gunung Mas Regency, Pulang Pisau Regency, and Kapuas Regency. In its implementation, the Food Estate faced rejection from several parties due to the negative impacts it caused, including environmental damage, conflicts with indigenous communities, and socio-economic unsustainability. Greenpeace, as an international organization focusing on the environment, collaborated with local organizations and legal aid institutions to reject and expose the negative impacts of the Food Estate project in Central Kalimantan.
The research method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques through literature studies and in-depth interviews with Greenpeace Indonesia. This study uses a Constructivist perspective to explain that international actors act based on the norms and identities they adhere to. The Non-Governmental Organization theory is used to analyze the implementation of Greenpeace's role as an NGO in assisting the rejection of the Food Estate in Central Kalimantan.
The results of this study provide an understanding of Greenpeace's efforts in conducting rejection actions and revealing the negative impacts of the Food Estate project in Central Kalimantan. The research findings show that Greenpeace has carried out its Advocacy and Operational functions to reject Food Estate activities since 2020-2023
